What Are Dietary Supplements?

Why should you be interested in dietary supplements? Well, the link between what people eat normally during meal times and their health has been recognized since ancient times. Moreover, there are many cultures, especially in Asian countries, where food and medicine are considered synonymous. The principle there has always been: Food and medicine are from the same source and are similar in function.

Due to inorganic fertilizers and other modern soil depleting technologies being used to grow food, vegetable and fruits are found to be more and more lacking in adequate quantities of essential nutrients. Food supplements have become the primary solution for helping a person to maintain his/her health.

Here is a classical and all-inclusive definition of dietary supplements: "That product (not including tobacco) which has one or many vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acid (essential or non-essential amino acids) or a combination of all, which is to be used to provide nutrition to its consumer in supplementation of his or her diet."

The Importance of Supplements

Supplementing vitamins and/or minerals is very important for people whose regular diet may contain insufficient quantities of nutrients. Pregnant women, body builders, athletes, children, etc. require large doses of vitamins and minerals to take care of their bodily functions. Deficiencies result serious repercussions – stunted growth of the unborn child, ineffective and incomplete muscle recovery after exercise, and mental and physical stagnation in growth are just some of the negative effects.

Many supplements, or food supplements, are used to achieve many different results. Say you are having problems with your waistline. The food supplements of choice are those that boost your metabolism so that you can burn more calories and reduce fat, or fat blockers, which prevent your intestines from absorbing the fat consumed in your regular diet.

Supplements: A Word of Caution

The caution regarding consumption of food supplements is a common precaution that one needs to take regarding consumption of anything. Excess of anything is bad, and this applies to food and dietary supplements as well. Good food supplement companies, caution consumers about the dangers of excessive supplement consumption. But not all companies are straight forward, this where the comes the moto "buyer beware" when shopping for supplements.

However, when one remains within the confines of normal food supplement consumption, there is nothing like taking supplements to get boundless energy, youthful looks and a healthy and fit body.
